Contrast can provide "pizazz" to a room. The furniture should be all the same style but the accessories can introduce different patterns and colors to unify. You can do this by featuring the same color on a number of different items in the room.

Visual balance can be shown symmetrically and asymmetrically. An example of symmetrical design could be two vases placed on each end of a fireplace. An example of asymmetrical design is when a vase and a candlestick are at each end of the fireplace. It is two dissimilar objects used to balance one another. Size and placement of decor items can balance your space.

Proportion deals with the size of objects in relation to the other objects in a room. Thus a large piece of furniture like a piano would look disproportionate in a small room.
